Help with mysql 3.22.25 for freebsd

  I have installed php and mysql 3.22.25 but I get a error when
executing

./mysqladmin -u root password mysquirrel

/usr/local/bin/mysqladmin: connet to server aat 'localhost' failed
error: 'access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (using password:NO);

I have read the documentation and adjusted my hosts file for the
localhost but that doesn't do any good What can I do?
