Subject:question about mysql backup

Hi all,

Up until now we always created database backups using the mysqldump tool.

But I'm wondering, if it is possible to just create a tar archive of the 
complete mysql data directory.

We are running on Linux (2.4.18) and we use mysql 4.014.
