Protocol mismatch, Server Version = 9 Client Version =

Hello

I have a C app that uses libmysql.dll provided with
MySQL 4.1.0-max-nt distribution. I am trying to
connect to a remote server running MySQL 3.23.47 and I
get the error -

Error No. 2007 
Protocol mismatch, Server Version = 9 Client Version =
10

whenever I try to connect using mysql_real_connect().

What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.
