Subject:Frustrations with upgrading to 4 from 3, and a lack of notes and docs
View as plain text
Forgive me if this is documented, but I cant seem to find it, I have some
questions about the update to mysql 4 from 3.

Given the following scenario...
Live production server running mysql 3.23
Test server running 4

I am just testing now, so it is not critical, and boy am I glad I am
testing. The MySql 4 server has a pre made mysql database in it from the
default install. I have been using this a little, loaded netjuke and some
other things into it, also have phpmyadmin running as well. While not
horrible to lose that data as it is easily re-creatable, I would like to
retain it.

This means I can move all the databases over from the production server to
the test server, all except the mysql database. How do you merge the data
from the old mysql database to the new one?

If this is not a option, I will just move all my 3.23 databases, including
the mysql database, and replace everything on the mysql 4 system.

What do you recommend?

Next problem
As a test I copied one database over from 3.23 to 4, and tried many many
variations to run the mysql_fix_privilege_tables, all of which failed. I am
on OS X 10.2.x

I went as far as to hard code the root user and pass into the file, and
still get permission errors. I get these
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)
On every iteration of the script.

Furthermore, the mysql_convert_table_format database does not work under OS
X either. Not a huge deal, I can do it the old fashioned way, but it will
take me a little time is all. I will probably just write a script to do it.

System is OS X 10.2

And not to be snotty, but the quick one line replies don¹t really help me,
looking for real examples, and hopefully people who can provide me enough
details to get past this. Thank in advance.
If this has been covered, please just point me to relevant resources.
