A few things could be happening.
If your using Linux or *NIX (maybe even windows) if a process is
consuming to much resources Linux (if configured-it's a kernel setting)
could kill a process.
- OR -
Someone did a ps -aefw |grep mysql | awk '{print $2}' |xargs kill -9
 - OR - 
Or you hit a bug.

Take a look at your mysql error log and your syslog to determine if the
kill was due to the kernel "feature" or a bug.
