Hi,
In /etc/my.cnf you must put the right path to this file.
E.g.
[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/tmp/mysql.sock
.....

Or if you don't want to make changes int my.cnf file you can connect using :
mysql -S /tmp/mysql.sock
