missing mysql.sock file

I installed using the src files.
I untarred, etc.
./configure
gmake
gmake install

then from /usr/local/bin
I did sh mysql_install_db
./safe_mysqld &

then when I did
mysqladmin version

I got the following error message:
mysqladmin: connect to server at localhost failed
error can't connect to local MySQL server (2)
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: /var/lib/mysql/mysqlsock
exists

well I checked and the mysqlsock file doesn't exist.

What went wrong?

This is my second install, the first was using the LINUX rpm, and it
installed to /usr/bin

This install went to /usr/local/bin
