obtaining enum values using php3

Hi, I am new to the list and MySQL.
I am working on a small web interface to a database and want to create some
forms. I was wondering what methods could be used to get the possible values
for a type ENUM.
I currently use 'describe table column' and parse it, but its not a very nice
routine. 
If any knows of any PHP functions that may help, or MySQL ones, it would be
greatly appreciated
