You can specify location of the socket file here.

SHOW VARIABLES LIKE "port"

default port 3306

Why not?

You socket file is located in the /var/lib/mysql. Your client (php
script) is looking for the socket file in the /tmp dir. So, you can
"notify" client where socket file is located (php.ini), you can run
mysqld with --socket=/tmp/mysql.sock option or you can create symlink.
