Are your databases in /var/lib/mysql ?IT is trying to startup with reading
databaseses from that path but i think it can't..
Also check the error log file to see what's going on.

Well, that's certainly progress of sorts :-)
It's just 'hanging' now. It says 'starting mysqld daemon with databases
from /var/lib/mysql' and just hangs....
any ideas?
