Hi everyone,
I have searched the archives and read the manual but am at a loss as to
how to get my root password back (or change it)

The trick appears to be to start mysqld with --skip-grant-tables but I
can't seem to do it. Here is what I've done:

(running on Linux)
service mysqld stop

/etc/init.d/mysqld --skip-grant-tables // no joy
/usr/libexec/mysqld --skip-grant-tables // no joy
service mysqld --skip-grant-tables start // no joy

I'd appreciate a little help :-)
