If you copy message_api.so into /usr/lib, does it work?

Alternately you might have to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH in the environment  
when you start mysql.

Maybe this relates to the way that the dynamic linker on Linux (but  
not most other systems) won't find shared objects in the search path  
unless the filename begins with "lib" ...
