OK, so here is a little announcement:
the packages which will be delivered with SuSE Linux 8.1 and those on the
ftp-server have mainly the following changes:
- /usr/spool is no longer used; it's all /var/spool now
- the packages are available for the following architectures
(not all of them are fully tested yet)
* ix86
* IA64
* x86-64 (AMD Hammer)
* IBM zSeries
- the runtime-created database files (and supplementary files as logs and
config-files) are not longer world-read-writable
(all database system users have to be in group sapdb)

not for 8.1. Perhaps this is possible with future releases.
PHP is AFAIK linked against libiodbc. So you should be able to use ODBC?
