in the source code itself there are long comments at the start of some .c
files.

In internals.texi there is a treatise by Peter Gulutzan. I am not sure if
internals.texi is in the public source tree. Can anyone help here?

And last but not the least, InnoDB is to a great extent designed by the
advice in Gray and Reuter: 'Transaction processing', published around 1991.
That book is by far the best source about database implementation.
