I cannot answer that.
We've changed to a new development model recently
(http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Development_Cycle), according to it a
feature will be accepted into a trunk only when a reaches a certain
level of quality. As for subquery optimizations it depends on how many
bugs our QA will find and how fast we'll be fixing these bugs.
The timeline for subquery optimizations is difficult to predict at the
moment. But it looks like they won't get into 5.4.
