[Chad, sorry my earlier reply was only to you; I hadn't noticed the
list was CC'd.  I'll summarize here for the list.]

I got as far as removing some code that was restricting giving
defaults to BLOBs, saw that it worked but the defaults weren't
reflected in "show create table" yet, then put it aside while I wait
for MySQL to switch to a free SCM system.
