semantic storage engine

Is there anyone (including MySQL A.B.) developing any semantic storage engine?

I've heard about Monty's speak on semantic databases and would like to
know if there are plans to develop a native storage engine for
semantic data, instead of the current solutions to map it to a
relational database and translating SPARQL to SQL.

I might start developing on my own but would like to if there's anyone
else already in the lead.
