I am working on a research project entitled "Success Factors for Open
Source Software Project", which is working to identify the factors
that contribute towards project success.
We see MySQL as an clear example of a successful OSS project, thus we
want to include it in our study.
I tried to use the "Contact Us" link on mysql.com to find a contact
who could direct me to critical data for the study. That attemp was a
failure. I'm now sending this to you, the developers, because you may
care about potentially helping the OSS community learn from the
success of MySQL.
If there is anyone on this list who is interested in in helping please
contact me at wilkins@stripped. I am in need of information
such as the number of system/source code downloads, developer team
size, defect records, etc.
This is a legitimate research project. For an example of our work, see
the following article:
T. Dinh-Trong and * J. Bieman*. The FreeBSD project: A replication
case study of open source development. /IEEE Trans. Software
Engineering/, 31(6):481--494, June 2005. Preprint

A pessimist says the glass is half-empty. An optimist says the glass
is half-full. An engineer recognizes that the glass is simply too big.
