Yes, it poses a problem on shared servers. But, depending on what industry you work,
you're not even allowed to store customer data on third-party servers.
I suppose colocation would be the most adequate solution. You'd have control over all
aspects of your server (provided your OS is certified by the colo AND your box survives a
penetration test), without worrying about bandwidth, cooling and backup power.
When you're using resources provided by someone else - the point of which is always saving
money and focusing on your core business while letting the provider take care of the gory
details -, there will always be limitations. More flexibility usually implies a higher
cost...
