I have done my fair share of research as well with a friend at work. Brian's
assessment seems correct, until you get to the part where it didn't work
using IMAP over SSL (self signed). If it was the openssl framework, why
would self signed not work either? Self signed shouldn't care about trusted
certs and such should it?
