* from where are your mysql-binaries
* how have you installed them?
* did you follow really the install instructions?
* post your my.cnf (the one which is used, consultate docu of your package)
* ls -lhaR /opt/local/var/db/mysql5

generally: consider to move this to mysql-list
this all is clearly not a phpMyAdmin problem
