Thanks for looking at the patch. I have pushed it.

I am planning to do more work on this bug and expect there will be one 
(or possibly two) more patches on this bug. The reason for committing 
this now was that this could be pushed as an independent unit of work 
and that it hopefully will fix a lot of the unneccessary crashes that is 
seen in the new pushbuild test rigs when compiling with the Sun Studio 
12 compiler.
