let $i = $databases + 1;

This does not do any arithmetic, is creates a *string* ending in
" + 1". When you try do use this as a number later, that " + 1" is
probably ignored.

This particular arithmetic can be achieved thus:

let $i = $databases;
inc $i;

In the more general case you'd have to resort to

let $var= `SELECT <some expression>`;

Maybe this wasn't your code originally, but I'd like to point it out
anyway.
