Don't really know. Most cluster interconnects have a socket version 
which can be used using
the normal TCP/IP transporter. I have used a similar socket 
implementation with SCI, another
cluster interconnect.

1 replica means data is only partitioned, there is only one copy so one 
ndbd crash will crash the
cluster.
2 replicas means data is partitioned but 2 ndbd nodes is used for each 
partition. Thus every data
item has a copy in 2 nodes. If one node crashes the cluster continues 
to operate and when node
restarts it will again be 2 copies.
